Wall Painting Services in Chesterfield
Interior Walls
Interior wall painting covers everything from a single-room refresh to a whole-house repaint. The preparation stage determines the quality of the result. Cracks, loose plaster, and contaminated surfaces all need addressing before any primer or topcoat goes on.
Chesterfield’s Victorian and Edwardian properties in Brampton, Newbold, and Walton have original lime plaster walls. These need breathable primers — sealing them with a vinyl-based primer traps moisture and leads to paint failure. See our interior painting page for the full interior scope.
Exterior Walls
Exterior wall painting covers rendered facades, brick, and stone surfaces. Chesterfield’s 1930s semis across Hasland and Walton have painted render on regular paint cycles. Period terraces in Brampton and Newbold have varying exterior finishes.
Before painting any exterior wall, we assess the render condition, check for cracks and hollow sections, treat any biological growth, and specify the correct primer. Exterior wall painting done without adequate preparation fails early. See our exterior painting page for more detail.
Feature Walls
A feature wall gives a room a focal point. Chimney breasts, alcoves, and the wall behind a bed are the most common choices in Chesterfield homes. Feature walls can be painted in a contrasting tone or finished in a textured or specialist coating.
We paint feature walls as part of a full room repaint or as a standalone job. Colour advice is included at the site visit. See our feature wall painting page for the full range of finish options.
Plasterboard and New Plaster
Freshly plastered walls need a sealing coat before any standard emulsion goes on. New plaster is highly absorbent — applying undiluted emulsion directly causes uneven drying and can pull the plaster surface.
New plasterboard, extensions, and loft conversions in Chesterfield’s family homes, particularly in Walton, Dronfield, and Wingerworth, commonly require this preparation. We include sealing coats in our quotes for all new plaster work.

Textured and Artex Wall Painting

Artex and Textured Surfaces
Artex and textured finishes on walls are present in some of Chesterfield’s 1970s and 1980s housing. They require the correct preparation approach. We do not sand Artex — sanding creates dust and, on older Artex, carries an asbestos risk.
Where painting over texture is appropriate, we use the correct primer and a roller with sufficient pile depth to achieve even coverage across the surface.
House Painting Scope
Wall painting often forms part of a broader house painting project, covering ceilings and woodwork alongside walls. We quote the full room scope as standard — partial repaints rarely match the existing finish satisfactorily.
See our ceiling painting page if you need ceilings included alongside your wall painting work.
Period and Modern Properties
Chesterfield’s housing stock runs from Victorian lime plaster in Brampton’s bay-fronted terraces to smooth plasterboard in Wingerworth’s newer builds. We work across all property types and specify materials accordingly for each surface.
Our Wall Painting Process
1. Surface Assessment
We assess the wall type, existing coating condition, and any preparation work required. Period plaster, new plaster, and plasterboard each have different requirements — we identify these before quoting.
2. Preparation
Cracks are filled and sanded. Loose sections are stabilised. Contaminated surfaces are washed down. The correct primer for the surface type is applied before any topcoat. This stage takes longer on period properties than modern ones.
3. First Coat
The first coat establishes coverage and seals the prepared surface. On new plaster this is the sealing coat. On existing walls it is the first topcoat applied once priming is complete.
4. Second Coat and Finishing
The second finish coat is applied once the first is fully dry. Cutting in at cornices, dado rails, and skirting boards is done by hand with a brush. Rollers are used on the open field.
5. Check and Touch-Up
All walls are checked in raking light for thin patches or marks before we leave. Touch-ups are completed on the day so every room is finished to standard.

Wall Painting Costs in Chesterfield
Prices below are estimates only. Every wall is different. Call 01246 607076 for a precise quote.
Wall Type and Condition
Original lime plaster with cracks and texture requires more preparation than smooth plasterboard. Preparation is the most time-intensive part of any wall painting job and has the biggest effect on the final price.
Paint Quality
Trade ranges are the standard. Heritage ranges cost more per litre. We quote the product alongside the labour so you know exactly what you are paying for before work begins.
Scope
Walls only is less than walls, ceiling, and woodwork combined. We always recommend quoting the full room at once — partial repaints rarely match the existing finish satisfactorily.
Interior wall painting typically costs between £8 and £18 per square metre, including preparation and two finish coats. A single room interior walls only (Victorian terrace, Brampton) typically costs £180 to £350 depending on room size and surface condition.
Exterior Render Pricing
Exterior render on a 1930s semi in Hasland or Walton is quoted after site assessment. Exterior wall area and condition vary significantly by property. Whole-house interior walls are priced on the same basis as our interior painting page.
